6. Healthcare Education

PART C – A Designed Journey of Healthcare Practice

Part C builds out the professional’s journey, with a rapid narrative tracing the healthcare professional’s experience from fateful decision (to be a doctor or nurse) to career in practice or hospital. We cannot cover every professional persona/type, but will choose 2-3 representative ones and build their story around the touchpoints and interactions they have with enhanced interface and interaction design. We will (perhaps) start with a student’s entry into medical school, the UX design in education and e-learning services, and their residency program and hands-on learning of procedures and surgery techniques. We will illustrate the direct connection between quality of educational experience and the patient experience (and survival). The two journeys of patient and professional will be merged and exchanged.

Ch 6. Design for Healthcare Education

Medical, nursing, and pharmacy education require intensive didactic learning, study, examination, real dissection, and technology-based simulations. No other educational experience comes close to the intensity and variety of teaching methods. UX and information design have had huge impacts on education and learning. New online resources have taught a new generation of professionals to use rapid research services (PubMed), diagnostics/health information services (MD Consult, Up-to-Date), WebSurg and other surgery video sharing sites, and medical e-learning services (ProceduresConsult).
