I think a topic that is very hot right now is Patient Adherence and the impact that improved adherence can have on long term healthcare costs. It is a great topic to work with because it allows introduction of all touchpoints within the patient continuum - patients, doctors, pharmacists, insurers, the support network, etc. It is also an interesting topic because of its broad range of definitions - does this apply just to sick people... or do healthy people factor in? where does technology play role and is it effective? what about out of industry innovation - how doe entrants such as MS, Google, and comms company change the dynamic of health management? how much of adherence is proactive and how much of it is reactive? Anyhoot... i could go on, but wanted to make the suggestion as i know my clients are asking alot about the topic and there are some really interesting findings coming out of primary research with all of the stakeholders.
BTW - how can we get involved in the conference?

I highly recommend the Healthcare sessions at the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society annual meeting. The sessions go deeply into how design can induce or reduce errors and support clinicians in their work. Regular presenters include Pascale Carayon (editor of the Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care and Patient Safety), Ben-Tzion Karsh (whose many publications in the area include the recent JAMIA paper, "HIT: Fallacies and Sober Realities"), among many others. The discussion is usually incredible.
